Punk in Africa is the story of the multi-racial punk movement within the recent political and social upheavals experienced in three Southern African countries: South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. An amazing look into a scene that was underground, hidden, banned and persecuted.
Keith Jones is a documentary filmmaker based in Czech Republic. He is the director of films including Punk in Africa (2012), Vinyl Generation (2016) and the forthcoming Revolution Summers, about the activities of Washington DC-based Dischord Records behind the Iron Curtain. He was the program director of the pioneering MOFFOM film festival of music documentaries (2004-2008). He also works as a writer, curator, DJ and organizer of cultural events, and lectures in sociology at Charles University in Prague.
Deon Maas has been involved with South African music since the late 70’s – first as a journalist, then a record company executive and then as a TV producer and documentary filmmaker. He has written various books and is a regular contributor to South African publications writing about the overlap between pop culture, politics and history. He has hosted various radio programmes, had a late-night talk show on South African television and was a judge on Idols. He has travelled extensively through sub-Saharan Africa for media and content creation. He is an experienced media strategist, visual artist and an award-winning author and filmmaker.
